AMERIA Strategy: AI and Digital Sovereignty

Germany and Europe have so far missed all the major leaps in digitalization. They are laggards. The price we pay is the loss of digital sovereignty. We are dependent on digital technologies, platforms, and tools that are currently provided mainly by the USA, and in the future perhaps increasingly by Asian countries. This applies equally to private users, companies, and public administration. Germany and Europe are digital colonies. We have lost control over our private, economic, and governmental data.

This is not only a great political risk but also a huge economic disadvantage. Globally competitive digital corporations, with few exceptions, have not been built in Europe. Over the past two decades, the European economy has not come close to developing the same dynamism as the American or Asian economies.

The Opportunity of Artificial Intelligence
The development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) presents a unique opportunity to change this. AI will lead to fundamental changes. Now is the chance to break up the cartel of the big platforms. Now is the historic opportunity to redefine the interface between humans and the digital world.

AI is not a product. AI is a new technology that can be used to develop products. Different Large Language Models (LLMs) can be used in various ways, either directly like ChatGPT or via specially trained models. AI will be integrated into individual applications. New, AI-driven tools are emerging. At the same time, the automatisms of recent years are dissolving: If AI can research and compile results, why still use Google?

AI thus opens a space that seemed already closed. New players are emerging who can assert themselves with new forms of interaction with the digital universe. This is also causing movement in the real world. A new dynamic is emerging, from which those who come forward with the right ideas can benefit massively. A new dynamic in which Europe and all users worldwide have the chance to regain their digital sovereignty and put Europe back on a path of sustainable growth.

Occupying the Interface
Occupying the interface between humans and AI is the key. Currently, all AI runs via the cloud. AI via the cloud means that providers can collect data about people, companies, and states in ways the platforms could only dream of until now.

The crucial point is that AI should be used locally as much as possible. Local AI allows the protection of sensitive data. Personalization takes place on the device, not on the platform. The cloud is only involved with the express consent of the user. Different AI systems can be used locally or, with appropriate anonymization, in the cloud as needed.

Local AI is made possible by ever smaller models and ever faster chips. Very soon, the new class of AI devices will have enough computing power to handle most tasks. Maximizing the use of local computing resources is also good for the environment. The construction of thousands of energy-intensive cloud centers can thus be avoided.

The AI Device
Every fundamentally new technology requires a new form of interaction. Only with a new device that excites people and delivers significant added value can the interface be occupied. A device will only become the central AI device if people actually want to use it. For this, not only must the functions be convincing, but the operation must also be simple, intuitive, and an experience.

The best forms of interaction arise from the perfect coordination of software and hardware – as the iPhone demonstrated for mobile internet use. At the same time, it is not about developing new categories of devices, but about building on familiar forms. The overwhelming majority of people want to move within what is familiar.

The best basis for the new, central AI device is therefore the laptop – a laptop with a revolutionary interaction concept that combines easy access to AI with the virtualization of operation. Through virtualization, the form of interaction can be adapted to all applications. The use of existing applications becomes easier, and new applications can be developed without the limitations of the physical keyboard and trackpad.
